Rule 1. Article 'The' का प्रयोग किसी Noun के विषय में यह बताने के लिए किया जाता है कि यह Noun विशिष्ट है। इसे हम पूरी तरह जानते है।
जैसे -
(a) The book, you need, is under print.
(b) The man, you see is my relative.
Rule 2. नदी, पर्वत, महासागर, रेगिस्तान, द्वीप समूह, प्रसिद्ध इमारते, प्रसिद्ध पुस्तकों के नाम से पहले The का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
जैसे -
(a) The Himalaya, The Alps, The Ganga, The Indian Ocean, The Bay of Bengal, The Yamuna Canal, Bhopal Tal.
(b) प्रांतो के नाम से पहले - The Punjab, The Deccan, The United States of America.
(b) वायुयानों के नाम से पहले - The Vikrant, The Ashok.
1. The का प्रयोग पर्वत श्रेणियों (series of mountains) के नाम के पहले होता है।
जैसे - The Himalayas, The Apls, The Vindhyas, The Eastern ghats.
Note - लेकिन peaks of mountain (पर्वत की चोटियों) के नाम के पहले The का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।

Rule 3. The का प्रयोग नदियों (rivers) के नाम के पहले होता है।
जैसे -
The Ganga The Koshi

Note - लेकिन जब किसी नदी के नाम के साथ उस सहर का नाम जुड़ा हो तो जो उस पर स्थित है तो उस नदी के नाम के पहले 'The' का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।

Rule 4. The का प्रयोग सागरों (sea), महासागरों (Ocean), खाड़ी (bay/gulf) के नाम से पहले होता है।
जैसे- महासागरों के नाम

The Atlantic ocean (अटलांटिक महासागर)

Rule 5. The का प्रयोग द्वीपों के समूह (group of island) के पहले होता है।
जैसे -
The Andamans
The Nicobars
The Phillipines
The West Indies

Note - लेकिन किसी खास द्वीप के नाम के पहले The का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे-

Rule 6. The का प्रयोग दिशाओं (directions) के नाम से पहले होता है।
जैसे -
The east, The south-west

इन वाक्यों को देखे :
जैसे - The sun rises in east. (Incorrect)

Note : लेकिन दिशाओं के नाम से किसी स्थान विशेष का नाम स्टार्ट हो, तो स्थान विशेष के नाम के पहले The का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे -

Rule 7. The का प्रयोग धार्मिक (religious community) के नाम से पहले होता है।
जैसे - The Hindus, The Muslims, The Sikhs, The Christians, The Jews, The Persians.
Rule 8. The का प्रयोग physical position expressing word (भौतिक स्थान सूचक शब्द) के पहले होता है।
जैसे - at the top of ,
at the bottom of
at the back of
at inside
the front of
Rule 9. The का प्रयोग दुनिया के अनूठी वस्तुओं के नाम से पहले होता है।
जैसे -
The sun The moon
The stars The sky
The world The universe
The ocean The South Pole
The mountain The air
The Equator The weather
The earth The sun shine
Rule 10. The का प्रयोग Government branches (सरकार की शाखाओं), or Armed forces (सशस्त्र सैनिको) के नाम के पहले होता है।
जैसे -
The Judiciary (न्यायपालिका)
The Executive (कार्यपालिका)
The Navy (जल सेना)
The Police (सिपाही)
The Airforce (वायुसेना)
The Army (थल सेना)
Rule 11. The का प्रयोग राजनितिक दलों (political parties) के नाम से पहले होता है।
जैसे - The Congress Party
The Janta Dal
The Bhartiya Janta Party
The Communist Party
The Samata Party
The Democratic Party

(d) Proper Noun जब Common Noun की तरह प्रयोग किया जाये। जैसे - Kalidas is the Shakespeare of India. यहाँ Shakespeare का अर्थ है - एक महान नाटक लेखक। अतः Common Noun के अर्थ में प्रयुक्त है।
(e) महान ग्रंथो के नाम से पूर्व The का प्रयोग किया जाता है। ग्रन्थ धार्मिक हो या साहित्यिक हो या ऐतिहासिक हो सभी के साथ ही नियम लगता है।
जैसे - The Ramayan, The Bible, The Quran, The Geeta etc.
(f) Newspapers के नामों से पहले The का प्रयोग होगा।
जैसे - The Hindustan, The Jagran, The Amar Ujala, The Dainik Jagran etc.
(g) आकाशीय नछत्रो के नाम से पहले The का प्रयोग होगा।
जैसे - The Sun, The Moon, The Sky, The Stars etc .
(h) Ordinal Adjective of Number से पहले The आता है।
जैसे - The first, The second, The third.
(i) Suparlative Degree के Adjective से पहले The आता है।
जैसे - The tallest boy, The highest mountain.
Note - यदि Adjective का प्रयोग Common Noun के रूप में किया गया हो तो उसके पहले The आता है। जैसे - The Poor = गरीब लोग। The Rich = धनी लोग।

Rule 12. किसी भी देश के नाम पर बोले जाने वाले निवासियों के लिए The लगाकर बोला जाता है। जैसे - The Indians defeated the chinese.
The Indians, The Chinese, The Americans, The Japanese, The Russians, The Nepalese etc.
लेकिन उस देश की भाषा से पहले The नहीं आता है। जैसे - I know how to speak chinese. (भाषा)
Everybody knows English. (भाषा)
Rule 13. एकवचन (Singular Noun) Common Noun से पहले The का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
जैसे -
(i) The cow is a gentle animal.
(ii) The dog is a pet animal.
(iii) The horse runs fast.
Note : लेकिन Man से पहले The का प्रयोग यहाँ नहीं होगा। जैसे - Man is mortal. (यह अटल सत्य है।)
Rule 14. यदि Comparative Degree के Adverb से पहले The का प्रयोग किया जाता है तो वह Conjunction की भांति प्रयुक्त होता है।
जैसे -
(i) The more you earn, the more you spend.
(ii) The more one has, the merrier he lives.
(iii) The more they get, the more they demand.
Where not use of The - The का प्रयोग कहाँ नहीं करें
Rule 1. The का प्रयोग भाषाओं (languages) के नाम के पहले नहीं होता है। जैसे -
The English is spoken in England. (Incorrect)
English is spoken in England. (Correct)
The people of India speak the Hindi. (Incorrect)
The people of India speak Hindi. (Correct)
Rule 2. The का प्रयोग Proper Nouns के पहले नहीं होता है। जैसे -
Patna is the capital of Bihar. (Correct)
The Patna is the capital of the Bihar. (Incorrect)
America is a rich country. (Correct)
The America is a rich country. (Incorrect)
Rule 3. The का प्रयोग विषयों के नाम के पहले नहीं होता है। जैसे -
Physics is a different subject. (Correct)
The physics is a different process. (Incorrect)
Note : लकिन विषयों के नाम का प्रयोग particularised sense में होने पर/ करने पर The का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे -
The physics of Mohan are poor. (Correct)
Physics of Mohan are poor. (Incorrect)
Rule 4. The का प्रयोग Uncountable Nouns के पहले नहीं होता है। जैसे -

Rule 5. जब man, women, humanity, mankind का प्रयोग व्यापक अर्थ में होता है, तो The का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे -
Man is mortal (मनुष्य मरणशील होता है।)
Women is the ornament of the home (औरत घर का गहना होती है।)
लेकिन ऊपर दिए गए Nouns का प्रयोग particularised sense में होने /करने पर The का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे -
The women who lives there is very active.
He is the man who has stolen my watch.
Note : जब Man, women.........etc. का प्रयोग सीमित अर्थों में Countable Noun के रूप में होता है, तो A / An का प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे - He met a women.
He met women.
